Lobes Of The Brain – A Place
Where Everything Starts
The human brain is one of the most mysterious and inexplicable things in human
biology. Though a lot of research has been done, we still have much more to learn
about the lobes of the brain.
Because of how much we’ve yet to uncover, in the future we might be able to access
some hidden brain functions. Imagine developing superpowers, like telekinesis and
mind reading!
The fact that we lack full knowledge of the brain’s capabilities keeps us from
understanding the true potential of the brain. So, until we know more about them, we
shouldn’t discount any ideas, no matter how impossible they might sound.
We’re going to explore what we do know about the brain, including the basic function
of the lobes of the brain, that are responsible for many important processes in the
body.
So, hang tight and let’s begin!
What Are The Six Major Regions Of The Brain?
For a moment, acknowledge and honor all that you are instead of all that you are not.
— Jim Kwik, the Author of Mindvalley’s Superbrain Program
There are six major regions of the brain and each of them have important functions:
1. Cerebrum – The cerebrum’s task is to help keep us conscious and to maintain
our basic mental activities and functions.
2. Diencephalon – The diencephalon includes two main parts: the thalamus,
which is like an antenna for sensuous tasks and the hypothalamus, which
allows us to manage our feelings and is responsible for basic individual
functions and hormone output.
3. Mesencephalon – The mesencephalon helps us hear, see, and controls our
basic reflexes.
4. Medulla oblongata – This part of the brain transmits sensuous signals to the
diencephalon and supports important systems, like the cardiovascular,
digestive, and respiratory systems.
5. Pons – The pons transmits sensuous signals to the cerebellum and the
thalamus and gives the partial support to the same systems as medulla
oblongata.
6. Cerebellum – The cerebellum is tasked with the coordination of highly
structured and complex motor functions.
What Are The Functions Of The Main Regions Of The
Brain?
The brain has many functions and is a vital organ in the human body. Think of it as a
machine with complex consciousness.
We’ve briefly mentioned the main regions of the brain above. Now let’s dive deeper
into the functions of each region.
1. Cerebrum
The cerebrum is the biggest region of the brain. Its task is to maintain the work of
the five human senses. It’s split into four regions, called the lobes of the brain, which
we will discuss a bit later.
The lobes of the brain allow us to perceive the world, talk, touch, sense, receive,
process, and send sensory information.
2. Diencephalon
This region of the brain is responsible for transmitting sensuous signals between all
other areas of the brain, while at the same time maintaining the peripheral nervous
system and its basic functions.
Essentially it’s the link between the major areas of the brain. It stimulates feelings and
memories by linking several layers of the limbic system with other systems.
3. Mesencephalon
The mesencephalon, also called the midbrain, is a portion of the central nervous
system responsible for our sense of sight and sound.
It’s crucial in maintaining several vital processes, such as sleeping, waking, and
wariness. Apart from that, it helps modulate our body temperature.
4. Medulla oblongata
The medulla oblongata is basically the thread that links the spinal cord to the other
important parts of the brain.
It regulates the oxygen levels in the body, sends signals to regulate heart rate and
blood pressure, and regulates reflexive actions like coughing, vomiting, and
swallowing.
5. Pons
Just like the diencephalon, the pons is tasked with transmitting various signals
throughout the brain lobes. It serves as the link between the cerebellum and the
cerebrum.
As for more complex functions, the pons also relates to the process of sleeping and
dreaming.
6. Cerebellum
Another name for the cerebellum is “little brain”. Its main task is to ensure the
stability of muscles and some basic activities related to the movement of our body.
If the cerebellum is injured, problems arise with the precision and speed of basic
movements.
The cerebellum is one of the smallest parts of the brain, but contains the highest
number of neurons. And these neurons are potent when it comes to transmitting
signals to other sections of both the brain and body.
What Are The 4 Lobes Of The Brain And Their
Functions?
The lobes of the brain are located in the cerebrum region of the brain. There are four
lobes, and each is responsible for a set of different functions. Each lobe of the brain is
crucial for the human body to be able to function properly.
1. Frontal lobe
The frontal lobe is where some of the more complex actions in the brain take place,
such as emotional regulation, higher planning, and problem solving.
Apart from that, the frontal lobe also helps facilitate body movement and memory
consolidation. Moreover, the left frontal lobe is in charge of speech production and
word comprehension.
2. Parietal lobe
The parietal lobe is responsible for signals of pain perception, sense of touch, and
feelings of pressure.
The ability to perceive different sensations played a great role in our evolution.
Without the feeling of pain our bodies can’t let us know that we are in dangerous
situation. Today, we know about the congenital insensitivity to pain or CIP, a
condition when a person can’t feel pain that can be quite dangerous for their
wellbeing.
So, as you can see, the proper function of the parietal lobe is quite important.
3. Temporal lobe
The main task of the temporal lobe is to transmit and process signals coming to the
primary auditory cortex. In other words, it allows us to make a distinction between
different types of sounds or languages.
But what does the temporal lobe do that the other lobes of the brain cannot?
It allows us to learn, feel, and remember.
The temporal lobe consists of the left temporal lobe and the right temporal lobe. The
primary function of the left temporal lobe is to control the sight and sound processing,
while the right side is in charge of visual memory and language comprehension.
4. Occipital lobe
The primary function of the occipital lobe is to decode the visual information it
receives, process it, and send it back to our eyes, as the main vision center is located
in the occipital lobe.
It allows us to distinguish the shapes and range of the objects we see.
These are the main functions of each lobe of the brain. Without any of them, human
being is not able to function adequately in the physical world.
Apart from lobes, we should also mention the sensory cortex. The sensory cortex
function is to “connect” our senses. The motor cortex is also important, as the
primary motor cortex function is to defines the way we move. All of these areas work
together with our four lobes to help us interact with our physical environment.
The brain is a powerful organ and we’ve only just begun to unlock its secrets. Perhaps
if we can learn to tap into the power of the brain, we will be able to use it to its full
capacity.
