Fractals in Nature - Print by Carole McNamee
Artist Statement: “After years as a painter, and many more years as a book artist, my curiosity led me to printmaking. Initially, I was curious about the possible interactions between printmaking and book arts. However, I have become increasingly interested in printmaking as an art form that stands by itself. I particularly enjoy the element of surprise present as a print is pulled off the press as well as the myriad technical challenges of creating a print. My recent works, using the solarplate, monotype, relief and intaglio techniques reflect an interest in fractal patterns revealed in natural elements: ferns, tree forms, coastlines and river deltas. Other works reveal the ongoing use of bird motifs over time and across a variety of media as well as a penchant for abstract expressionism.”
Artist Bio: Carole McNamee has pursued painting and creative endeavors her entire life, always seeking to juggle professional and personal imperatives with her desire to make art. Following a career as a professor of computer science in California and a family move to Blacksburg, Virginia, she returned to school and became a marriage and family therapist specializing in the use of the expressive arts as a therapeutic medium. In 2005, Carole founded Willowbank Creative Center where she directed The Arts in Healthcare Project in collaboration with the Family Therapy Center at Virginia Tech. After retiring - a second time - in 2015, Carole moved back to her New England roots, and now devotes much of her time to painting, collage, printmaking, and book arts. She has led workshops locally, regionally, and nationally in the therapeutic uses of the expressive arts and has exhibited in group and solo shows in Virginia, Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Vermont. When not in the studio, she enjoys spending time with family and friends, reading, and playing tennis.
