News Tips

Great journalism comes from great sources. CalMatters needs your help to tell California’s story.

If your tip isn’t sensitive, you can send us an email at [email protected]. You can also reach out to specific staff via our team page (click on a person’s name to find their contact details).

Confidential Tips

We rely on government workers, concerned Californians and insiders to send us tips, documents and data.

We take your privacy seriously and will not disclose your identity to anyone without your permission. No tool is completely secure, but these options below offer the best option for maintaining discretion.

We regularly review submissions and do our best to respond, but cannot promise a reply for every tip. We will respond to tips in the same method you contact us.

A couple of pointers:

  • We’re looking for hidden or important stories that aren’t being told anywhere else.
  • Please provide us with documentation or instructions on how we can get documentation.

Signal

  • If you’re worried about being tracked or discovered, you can send us information to us securely on Signal. CalMatters and The Markup’s signal number is (917) 407-0635.
  • This is particularly important for people who need to protect their identity and are worried about being tracked digitally.
  • Signal is a secure messaging app that can protect your identity. You can download it here.

Signal is an encrypted messaging app available on iOS and Android. Signal’s servers store your number, but they don’t store a log of who you communicate with, or who communicates with you. Before messaging us, you should consider setting messages to disappear after a short period of time. To do this, type in our Signal number and click on “New message to.” Then, before you compose a message, click on “Tap here for settings” and turn “Disappearing Messages” on, then adjust the slider to an appropriate time period.

Physical mail

If you’re worried about being tracked or discovered, you can also send us physical documents, or digital files on a USB stick, for example, through snail mail at: 1017 L Street #261 Sacramento CA 95814.

First class postal mail can be a secure way to send us files and documents because the Post Office cannot open your mail without a search warrant. It can, however, scan who is sending what mail to whom. So if you are concerned about your anonymity, please do not include a return address, and mail your package or envelope from a public mailbox far from your work or residence rather than at the post office.
