Hi there,

My computer is crashing randomly lastly.
It’s a brand new laptop (CPU is intel 285H with no dedicated GPU) on which I installed F42 a couple of months ago. I did an NVME SSD and RAM checks, no hardware error).
It was very slow at starting and for some app to launch I was waiting up to a couple of minutes (not talking games or “heavy software” but even the ptyxis terminal or gnome-disks - but mostly electron apps like obsidian and brave)

In dmesg or journactl the following errors was popping up often i915 0000:00:02.0: [drm] *ERROR* GT1: GSC proxy (this one even as early as in the boot process (e.g. when hitting ESC during boot while waiting for my LUKS password which is showing the logs) but also nvme nvme0: I/O tag 832 (9340) QID 3 timeout, completion polled (with numbers changing)

I read that this might be related to something called VMD from intel which my BIOS has.
Disabling this VMD thing definitely improved the boot time and the lag upon launching apps.
But it made my system even more unstable.

I try to fix this by disabling i915 in favor of xe which made my system definitely more usable (hence writing this).

At first I thought the problem was only related to launching brave or obsidian. But actually it happens randomly even with the disk utility (while not having any other app launched since boot).

I only had 2 kernels options 6.15.7 and 6.15.5 (if I don’t count the recovery one)… But I was able thanks to @glb to try an older version of the kernel.

So I also tried 6.11.4 which gives a little bit more stability..

Here are some journalctl logs from previous boots with various settings (different kernels and/or xe/i915).
Also I’m using priority 5 assuming it’s informative enough.
PS: I’m using priority 4 as I’m not able to post because of post character limit.
PS2: only the first lines and the last lines as the whole log (~600 lines) is exceeding the post limit

Here is the last crash (kernel 6.11.4) occurring on brave (when browsing here attempting to post this), received a SIGSEGV (according to the Problem Reporting window - I can also share that BTW if this can help):

Hello again…
It really seems that my issues are related to graphics..

As my laptop just crashed while browsing the web but this time showing some kind of graphic artifact just before freezing which we can see below (sorry picture from the phone)

You might be hitting multiple problems. The more concerning ones appear to be the timeouts when attempting to access your SSD (nvme0n1). It looks like there is a problem with your SSD and that has lead to some filesystem corruption (the Btrfs errors). You should:

  1. Backup your important files
  2. Run sudo smartctl -x /dev/nvme0n1 and see what it has to say about the health of your SSD

You’ll probably end up having to reformat and reinstall your OS to correct the filesystem corruption, but you need to figure out if the source of the problem is defective hardware or a firmware or software bug first.

P.S. The logs from the older kernels are not super useful since it is likely they are reporting errors that are already fixed in the newer versions. Booting with progressively older kernels is mainly useful for identifying if and when a kernel bug was introduced.

I think Fedora generally recommends using fpaste. You can pipe things to it and it will return a link that you can share here on this forum.

Thanks!
Also, thanks for fpaste, I remember having already used it in the past and I will definitely use it again for longer outputs..
In the meantime, here is the output of sudo smartctl -x /dev/nvme0n1:

Regarding the timeouts they are occurring when VMD is enabled which is currently disabled.

In fact I didn’t know at first.. My laptop was just very laggy in Linux and after searching a little bit I read that disabling VMD could help which it did (I read that intel VMD makes sense for hardware RAID which doesn’t make sense for my laptop that has only one nvme slot anyway)

I’m not sure if it’s relevant but when I installed Fedora first it was enabled, I wonder if it has an impact now it’s disabled? Although the crashes were happening even when it was enabled..

I don’t see anything interesting in the smartctl output. The Btrfs errors might be due to a bug in the filesystem driver. I think I saw a mention that there were problems with one of the kernel versions, but I do not remember which.

You might go ahead and have your SSD run a selftest with sudo smartctl -t long /dev/nvme0n1 just to be sure. Subsequently running sudo smartctl -x /dev/nvme0n1 should show you the results of the test (or how far along it is if it has not completed yet).

Sorry, I don’t really know anything about VMD. My guess is that if disabling was going to cause a problem with accessing the storage, it would have prevented the system from even booting. But that is just a guess.

Edit: If it really was the Intel VMD setting that was causing the timeouts when accessing the SSD and if that somehow corrupted your filesystem, that alone might be responsible for all the problems you’ve seen. If you are sure that switching off VMD has resolved the timeout problem, then you might be OK to just reinstall your system and everything might be fine (as long as you don’t turn VMD back on). :crossed_fingers:

Also, especially since the logs are reporting detected firmware bugs, it would probably be a good idea to make sure all the firmware on your PC is up-to-date.

Thanks!
I’m running the long test and will update the result here.

In fact I was afraid that my unit got a hardware issue.. But according to some hardware tests the BIOS provides, I don’t have any issue.

I’d reinstall Fedora with VMD off (and kept off) since a long time if I was sure it’s a transient issue related to this.. But somehow disabling VMD and the (frequent) freezes happened almost at the same time I did some updates (the BIOS and Fedora) so I was not sure if reinstalling could solve it.

But I guess I’ll definitely go ahead an reinstall from scratch..

Yeah, errors like:

gnome-session-binary[3942]: WARNING: Desktop file /home/aa/.config/autostart/shutter.desktop for application shutter.desktop could not be parsed or references a missing TryExec binary

and

gnome-shell[2263]: Failed to parse saved session file: Failed to open file “/var/lib/gdm/.config/mutter/sessions/106dedeccd3f9f8424175341694173821500000022510000.ms”: No such file or directory

plus all the Btrfs errors look like pretty severe filesystem corruption to me. Just a system update probably wouldn’t be enough to correct the problem. Be sure you do a full reformat of your Btrfs partition and subvolumes like /home (I’d delete all the partitions completely and let the installer recreate them to be sure).

Also, you should delete that corrupted ~/.config/autostart/shutter.desktop file from your backup of your home directory.

Good luck. :slightly_smiling_face:

Here the output of smartctl which seems to confirm I don’t have a hardware issue:

I think a) it needs Intel VROC software and compatible NVME drives and b) as vendors start selling systems with VROC+VMD configured Windows this issue will keep on coming.

https://linux-hardware.org/?id=pci:8086-09ab says it was found in nearly 5000 probes, but linux support is very new and mainly in enterprise distros (see below).

Kernel Drivers

We have not found a driver for the device in any Linux kernel versions up to 6.12 according to the LKDDb.

We have not found a driver for the device in known additional packages.

There is a link to download Intel_VROC_Linux_ReleaseNotes_Rev006.pdf (dated July 2025!) which lists Linux distros that support VMD that includes RHEL but not Fedora. There is a warning:

What you should know about the Intel® VROC package System vendors may customize the Intel® VROC package for their specific platforms. Reference your OEM for a full list of available feature sets. If any of the information referenced here conflicts with the support information provided by the platform OEM, the platform documentation and configurations take precedence.
