Someone at Microsoft answered our prayers.
Soon after the introduction of Windows 95, Microsoft got tired of responding to customer complaints (read "annoyances"), so they released TweakUI in their collection of "Power Toys."
TweakUI us a little settings window that allows you to fix a few annoyances without messing around in the Registry.
Read the following notes for your operating system:
Windows Me and Windows 2000
- Contrary to what Microsoft says on their website, the version of TweakUI available here will work just fine on Windows Me, as well as Windows 2000 and Windows XP.
It has been tested extensively on all three platforms.
Microsoft says otherwise to abrogate any obligation to support it.
Windows XP
- As stated above, this version of TweakUI available here will work just fine on Windows XP.
However, Microsoft has made available a more recent version for Windows XP only here.
Windows 98
- TweakUI is included on the Windows 98 CD, right in the \tools\reskit\powertoy\ folder, although the version available here is more recent.
It is not, however, included on the Windows 98 Second Edition CD.
Windows 95
- TweakUI was originally designed for Windows 95.
Note that if you have the version of TweakUI originally made for Windows 95, you should download the updated version available here.
For your convenience, the Windows 95 "Power Toys" are available from Microsoft's web site.
Download and Install
- Download TweakUI.
- Unzip tweakui.zip using an unzip utility, such as WinZip, and place the files in a new folder on your desktop.
- Right-click on the tweakui.inf file and select Install to install it on your system.
Note that there's a bug in the installer that comes with TweakUI (it's been there since the very first release, except for the new version for Windows XP).
If it prompts you to insert a disk or specify the location of the Tweakui files, just point to the folder containing the files you just unzipped, and click Ok.

The use of TweakUI is documented extensively in the Annoyances books, as well as elsewhere on this website.
Try searching Annoyances.org for "TweakUI" for tips.
For alternatives to TweakUI, check out O'Reilly Utilities (Windows 98 only) or the upcoming Creative Element Power Tools.
