Fall 2009

November 11, 2009- PRU CHAMPIONS
So this past weekend, GUWRFC came out on top again as the PRU Champions for the fourth year in a row. It was a rough weekend of rugby with two amazing games. On Saturday we played against St. Mary's University and won 19-7, followed by a victory over American University on Sunday with a score of 25-15. The hoya ruggers played as a team and the motto was 15 as 1. This victory wasn't just for the current players of the team but for everyone who has been a part of this rugby family (coaches, alumnae, fans) and for the legacy that they left behind... we will continue to work hard for them and to make them proud!!

October 29, 2009- What's been going on, you ask?!
Time flies... and we arealready nearing the end of the fall season. We have been working really hard at our practices and fitness. A special thanks to Alison Searle, former PSU rugger, for helping whip us into shape with her killer fitness workouts. This team has come a long way in just a couple weeks, and the rookies have picked up the game super well and some are even A side starters! While the majority of the season is over, we still have acouple really important games - namely our last matrix match against American this weekend and then the PRU tournament next weekendin Aberdeen, MD. A couple weeks ago we had the privilege of playing our 2nd matrix match against Salisbury on our ownfootball field and it was a great game (inthe pouring rain!). We have been supporting our fellow rugby players by watching some of the mens' rugby games on Harbinfield as well.

Things to come... PRU tournament - Voting for new officers - Banquet - Initiation.

September20, 2009- A few weeks in...
So the new season has started. We are well into our first fundraiser - SPANDEX SALE! Yesterday we had our second game against JMU after having played Mary Washington last week (scoresunder Macth Schedule link). We have a tough schedule this year of games to prepare us for PRUs and hopefully for MARFUs in the Spring! We are extremely lucky to have a huge group of amazing and very talented rookies!! For the first time in a long time, we can play a full game of 15s with players from just our team :)

September2, 2009- New Year. New Coach.
Due to some changes over the summer with our former coach, Nancy Fitz,we have been conducting an extensive search for head coach all this past summer. We now have a new head coach, Lance Pruett, who we have high hopes for! We believe that he will bring a lot of good ideas and guidance to this team and we look forward to working with him on and off the rugby pitch. In other leadership news, yesterday we voted in our new captains for this academic year: Bridget Kapinus as Forwards Captain, and Jane Dewire as Backs Captain. Congratulations! Let's make this a great year!

August15, 2009- Summer News
Even though all our players find themselves all over the world, the guwrfc ruggers still managed to get together and play in a 7s tournament at Rosecroft field in early June. Thanks to our wonderful Summer Coordinator, Kiki Guernier, for organizing this great event and for keeping us on a solid fitness track and always surrounded by rugby.

Spring 2009

April 29, 2009 - Farewell Seniors
At our end of Spring Season banquet, we said goodbye to our amazing group of seniors who will be leaving us to go onto graduate school or into the workfield. We will most definitely feel their absence and hope that they come back to visit us soon. We are eternally gratefull to everything these girls have contributed to the team, be it their wisdom, commitment, passion, and friendship. A huge thank you to: Margaret Leddy, Emilia Bruniard, Kim Beers, Caroline Curley, Liz Robinson, Emily Atkinson and Kat Incantalupo.

We would also like to recognize a special player that we have had the privilege of welcoming to our team this spring, Raquel Barras. Originally from Madrid, Spain, Raquel has played rugby in all its forms all over the world including the national team in Italy and the national team in Spain. It was a true inspiration seeing Raquel's desire to play with a group of girls she had just met based on the common love for rugby. In the past, the Georgetown Women's Rugger have welcomed foreign rugby players and we hope to continue this tradition in the future! We love you Raquel and will miss you!

- End of the Spring Rugby Season
Our rugby season ended yesterday with a couple great matches against UMD and the Stingers. Unfortunately, we did not go as far as we had hoped this season but nonetheless the Hoya Ruggers played their hearts out during a tough tournament weekend at the end of March with games against Shippensburg and LaSalle. After an intense winter training session, this team demonstrates a superior level of fitness than most teams but most of all, an immeasurable level of team bonding. We are all very proud of our accomplishments so far and can't wait until next fall!

- VICTORY against Mary Wash!

Yesterday the Georgetown Women Ruggers played their hearts out at Poolesville in the quarterfinal MARFU match against Mary Washington. With a final score and win of 20-10, the hoya ruggers will be moving onto the semi-finals held at UVA next weekend. Like our coach, Mel, said, we are on the verge of making history for women's rugby at Georgetown and if any team is capable of doing this, it is our team. The heart and passion with which every girl plays out on the field is unmeasurable and truly reflects the dedication of all the players, coaches, and fans to the sport and to this team. Wish us luck...

- CHOCOLATE SELLING FUNDRAISER!

This next week we are having a huge fundraiser for Valentine's Day. The GU Women's Rugby team will be selling our home-made chocolate! These delicious chocolate treats come in boxes of $5 or $10. The following are the mix-ins: peanuts, rice krispies, almonds, and walnuts. You can buy the chocolate for yourself or for that special someone. For a small extra fee we will even deliver your chocolate gift on Valentine's Day with a note and a song! We will be selling the chocolates in RED SQUARE all week from 10am-2pm. If you would like to buy a box or two but will not be on campus at these times, e-mail our Fundraising Chair, Kelly Olson!

January 30, 2009 - First game of the season!
We are getting ready for our spring season of rugby... the highlight this season is our MARFU game against Mary Washington on March 21. We have been training all winter and getting in shape for this important game (google Clarence Culpepper). Our new match schedule is up on the website and for all of you in the DC area, make sure you come and cheer us on at our first game on Saturday Feb. 28 against American University. For the first time, the Georgetown Women's Rugby Team will be playing on Georgetown's finest... HARBIN FIELD!

Fall 2008

December 18, 2008 - New team list-serve group!
We have just switched from our Yahoo Group list-serve to a new and improved Google Group!
Let's see how good google is to us... If you want to join this group and receive e-mails about our day-to-day rugby business, e-mail one of the officers. Or if you want to just send a team-wide e-mail, mail it to [email protected]

November 20, 2008 - Fall Banquet
After another phenomenal fall season of rugby, it is time for another one of those banquet shindigs. For the second year in a row, this event will take place at the Paper Moon Restaurant off of M Street in Georgetown. Sadly, though, we will be saying goodbye to one of our most amazing and dedicated players: April Asico. She will be leaving us to go off and be a real adult and enter the workplace. She will be greatly missed, especially in those scrums. We wish her all the luck in the world and hope she comes back to visit... maybe even play in an alumnae game or two?

Spring & Fall 2007

September 3, 2007 - GTOWN'S WOMEN RUGGERS ARE NATIONALLY RANKED!
The first ever GoffonRugby/ERugby News Women's DII College Top 20 ranking placed the Georgetown Women's team as #19 in the nation. Congratulations to all current and past players whose contribution made this a reality!

September 1, 2007 - New Coaches
We are very excited to have two fantastic new coaches for the school year, Nancy Fitz and PJ Fiore. Nancy is a long time member of the Furies, as well as having spent many years on the national team including several as captain. PJ is another ex-Fury who has played on the MARFU team for several years. These two will no doubt take our team to the next level, and we are honored to have them join our GUWRFC family.

July 8, 2007 - Hoyas Play 7s Part 2
As expected, the Hoyas 7s team had another super fun Saturday of rugby in Philly. They played three games with only 1 sub in lots and lots of heat. They lost their first two matches to the "ACL Avengers" (or more appropriately 2 players on their team at least one of whom is on the national team) and Severn River. HOWEVER, they rallied to beat the MDExiles, including players from UMD.
Following the tournament the team went to a sweet block party hosted by someone connected to Slippy (new nickname for Jane E. Bear). Of note at said block party was a 2nd place finish by Slash and NK in the water balloon toss and a 3rd place finish in the egg toss. Laura Jones and Courtney did not do so hot in the latter.

June 15, 2007 - Hoyas Play 7's Part 1
The Hoyas 7s team kicked off their summer season by placing second in NOVA's annual Battlefield sevens tournament. After beating the Stingers and James River in the quarter and semi finals respectively, the Hoyas lost to NOVA II. Team members included: Laura Jones ('10), Jane Dewire ('10), Emily Atkinson ('09), Emilia Bruniard ('09), Kim Beers ('09), Katy Welter ('08), Katie Keegin ('07), and Kellyann McClain ('06). Guest appearances by Molly Barg-Walkow (UNC '09) and Junior. The Hoyas 7s team will be playing in the upcoming Cheesesteaks 7s tournament, to be held on July 7th in Philadelphia
