Ed Ghandour claims ownership of the beach

A little over a year ago, we discussed Monterey Bay Eco-Resort developer, Ed Ghandour’s claim that his rights under a Mexican land grant gave him ownership of the beach in front of his proposed resort; a claim that sought to undo at least 1,500 years of legal precedent firmly establishing tidelands as public property.

That argument became a lot more serious last fall as lawyers for billionaire, Vinod Khosla, who has been excluding the public from the long-popular Martins Beach near Half Moon Bay, got a San Mateo County judge to issue an order finding that Khosla owns Martins Beach, tidelands and all. The Monterey Bay Shores “Eco Resort:” How Long Will it Last?

The beach in front of what may soon become the Monterey Bay Shores Eco Resort. And, yes, Ghandour has claimed to own the beach, as well as the dunes.

Indefatigable developer, Ed Ghandour, has finally obtained his long-awaited permit to build a massive hotel and condo complex on the rapidly eroding Sand City beach and says he’s hoping to break ground soon. Breaking ground, in this case, means digging an immense (over 700,000 cubic yards of grading) hole in dunes that currently host rare species, like the Monterey spineflower, Smith’s blue butterfly and western snowy plover, then plopping in over a million square feet of human habitat in buildings rising as high as nine stories above the beach.
