Lapeer, Mich.
Dedicated: Aug. 22, 2010
Patners: Lapeer District Library, Michigan Center for the Book
Marguerite deAngeli, a native of Lapeer, Mich., was an author and illustrator of 20th century children's literature. In 1950, she was awarded the Newbery Medal for The Door in the Wall. She was one of the first inductees into the Michigan Women's Hall of Fame. The main branch of the Lapeer City Library was renamed in her honor on Aug. 22, 1981. The library has an extensive collection of her materials, including original drawings.
Each attendee at the Literary Landmark dedication ceremony received a copy of Michigan's Marguerite deAngeli by William Anderson, deAngeli's biographer and a family friend, who signed copies. Art, books, and other artifacts associated with deAngeli were on display throughout the building. Those in attendence included Kate deAngeli Creitz, deAngeli's granddaughter, and Abby Creitz, deAngeli's great-granddaughter. Refreshments and a tour of the library followed the dedication.
