About the Division

The FCC's Consumer Affairs and Outreach Division (CAOD) engages the public through outreach and education initiatives to inform them about important consumer-related regulatory programs, telecommunications issues and other consumer issues that impact their day to day life.

CAOD looks forward to hearing from you about consumer-facing topics. Email us at [email protected] to schedule a meeting or request more information.

National Internet Safety Month

June is the start of summer, when the school year ends and vacation season begins. For many of us, this means more screen time, especially for kids who are out of school.

June is also National Internet Safety Month. FCC consumer guides have information to help you stay safe online and protect yourself and your family from potential risks. Check out the following links:

Children's Internet Protection Act
The Children's Internet Protection Act (CIPA) addresses concerns about children's access to obscene or harmful content on the internet. Schools or libraries must follow the FCC's rules for CIPA if they receive discounts to help make internet access or internal connections affordable through the E-rate program.

Protecting Children from Objectionable Content on Wireless Devices
Are you a parent concerned about online content that may be inappropriate for your child? Learn about types of content and apps children can access from their devices, including:

  • Services your child can access on their device, such as text messaging, sharing photos and videos, and using email apps.
  • Offers for free downloads or one-time use of applications that often have terms and conditions such as agreements to pay fees for continued usage.
  • Tempting offers for games (including those used with popular gaming systems), music, ringtones, images, and streaming video.

Tips for Secure Web Navigation and Transactions
Be smart about personal web security practices. Hackers can install spyware, malware, and other programs to access files, track web browsing and financial transactions, and steal passwords and other personal information. Be sure that anti-virus and firewall programs are installed and automatically update on your mobile devices. The same advice goes for your network access and connected devices in your home.

Wireless Connections and Bluetooth Security Tips
Free Wi-Fi networks and Bluetooth connections can be vulnerable points of access for stealing your data and identity. Awareness can help you avoid having your sensitive personal data stolen. The FCC has tips that can help.

Mobile Wallet Services Protection
Do you use your cellphone, tablet, and other mobile devices to pay for goods and services? Find out how you can protect your mobile devices, apps, and personal data from theft and cyber-attacks.

FCC in the ClassroomPlease note: this booklet contains an activity called "TV Pictures In Motion" which involves flipping between two pages. For best results for this activity, we recommend you print this booklet double-sided. If that option does not work for you, the activity is on pages 10 and 12 and can still be done by flipping between those two pages or using loose copies of those pages.
