May 2025 Tornado Damage
On May 16, 2025, an EF-4 tornado with winds of 170 mph tore a 55.6-mile-long path across eastern Kentucky. According to satellite imagery and ongoing on-the-ground assessments, the tornado impacted 29,298 acres (11,514 acres of National Forest System (NFS) land, 17,784 acres of private) between Somerset and London, Kentucky. Work to assess the damage, clear debris and restore access is ongoing.
