If you’re looking for a list of all PS5 first-party exclusives, then you’ve come to the right place.
In this PS5 guide, we’re compiling all Sony published software currently available on the new-gen console. However, due to the ever-changing nature of the industry, there are a number of caveats that need to be considered.
This is what we’re considering a first-party exclusive on PS5:
- The game must be published by Sony
- The game may be available on PS4
- The game may be ported to PC but must not be available on Xbox or Switch
- The game may be a remake or a remaster
- The game may be developed by an external studio
- The game’s IP may be owned by another company
In the list below we’ve included any notes about the nature of the exclusivity so you’re armed with as much information as possible.
So with all of the caveats outlined, let’s get down to business.
All PS5 First-Party Exclusives
Astro Bot (PS5)
Building upon the great foundations laid in Astro's Playroom, Astro Bot is the full-blown 3D platformer the little robot deserves. It's an explosion of creativity and fun; there is something new to discover in practically every level, and all of it is purpose built to put a smile on your face. Not only is it bursting with imagination, it's also executed brilliantly. The controls are spot on, every new mechanic and power-up is fun to use, and it's all presented with incredibly sharp visuals and flawless performance. The icing on the cake is its celebration of PlayStation's past 30 years, with delightful nods to hundreds of classics. We can't recommend this highly enough.

Astro's Playroom (PS5)
As far as pack-ins go, Astro’s Playroom is exemplary. Inspired by Team Asobi’s critically acclaimed PSVR platformer Astro Bot Rescue Mission – itself originally introduced in The Playroom VR – this short-form platformer serves as an introduction to the PS5, specifically the DualSense controller. As you explore cutesy character Astro’s vibrant world, you’ll physically feel it in your fingertips, from the sensation of rain falling on the hero’s hard, steel exterior to the slippery surfaces of ice. All of this, alone, would make it a truly memorable experience – but the game also doubles as a kind of history lesson, exploring many of the most famous moments from PlayStation’s past. Simply put, it’s an extraordinary four to five hour escapade, and one that every new PS5 owner must play.
Concord (PS5)
- Also available on PC
- Permanently removed from sale on 6th September, 2024
Potentially the most disastrous release in PlayStation history, Concord launched amid much fanfare from wholly owned first-party studio Firewalk. But after middling reviews for the first-person shooter, Sony decided to remove it from sale after it dramatically failed to find an audience.
Days Gone Remastered (PS5)
- Also available on PC
- Remaster of Days Gone on PS4
Days Gone Remastered changes Bend Studio’s underappreciated open world in more ways than you’d expect. With a new lighting engine, the tension is significantly amplified, while the new Horde Assault mode allows you to focus on the release’s most enjoyable moments: those white-knuckle face-offs against hundreds upon hundreds of Freakers.
Death Stranding 2: On the Beach (PS5)
- Developed by Kojima Productions
- IP owned by Kojima Productions
Masterful in its storytelling, characters, and visuals, Kojima Productions went bigger and better with a sequel that comfortably dwarfs what the Japanese team achieved in its first delivery experience. Main character Sam is once again tasked with reconnecting a land mass to the chiral network, but this time his deliveries are further and expanded to encompass proper combat scenarios. Death Stranding 2 is a cinematic achievement on all fronts that will remain one of the crown jewels of the PS5 library forever.
Demon's Souls (PS5)
- A remake of Demon's Souls on PS3
Sony comfortably hooked the enthusiast crowd by adding Demon’s Souls to the PS5’s launch lineup. FromSoftware’s legendary action RPG – which would go on to spawn the so-called Soulsborne series and, eventually, even Elden Ring – was snubbed by the Japanese giant during the PS3 era, as it felt early builds were simply not up to snuff. Publishers like Atlus and Bandai Namco eventually picked it up, and it went on to become a cult classic. Perhaps as a tacit admission that it made a mistake, its recruited tech specialists Bluepoint Games to remake the game for a modern era – and the results are remarkable. This version uses original PS3 code to make for an incredibly authentic experience, but its visuals are among some of the best you’ll find on Sony’s new-gen console. It’s an extraordinary blend of old and new that comes highly recommended.
Destruction AllStars (PS5)
Sony almost totalled Destruction AllStars when it intended to attach a £69.99/$69.99 price tag to the explosive racer, but it reversed its decision prior to the PS5’s launch and added it to the PS Plus lineup. While there was potential in the package on day one, it took developer Lucid Games a little time to iterate on the formula. With some small gameplay adjustments, such as the size of the arenas, this slam-‘em-up now feels fantastic – and it’s enhanced by a genuinely cool pool of character designs and some impressive visual effects.
Firewall Ultra (PS5)
- Only playable with PSVR2
- Developed by First Contact Entertainment
Firewall Ultra is a pseudo-sequel to the popular PSVR tactical shooter Firewall Zero Hour. But this 4v4 first-person shooter from First Contact Entertainment doesn’t have quite the same novelty as its predecessor, and has been surpassed by superior online PSVR2 shooters, like Pavlov VR.
Ghost of Tsushima: Director's Cut (PS5)
- Also available on PS4
- Ported to PC on 16th May, 2024
Ghost of Tsushima: Director’s Cut repackages one of the greatest open world games of the PS4 era on the PS5. A breakout hit for first-party developer Sucker Punch, this expanded re-release includes a new idyllic samurai sandbox named Iki Island, and forces protagonist Jin Sakai to face some painful memories. With improved presentation and stunning DualSense support, allowing you to physically feel the clash of steel-on-steel in your fingertips, this is the definitive version of one of PlayStation Studios’ crowning achievements.
God of War Ragnarok (PS5)
- Also available on PS4
- Ported to PC on 19th September, 2024
God of War Ragnarok improves on 2018's already excellent God of War in every possible way — which says it all, really. It's a massive adventure spanning all nine realms of Norse mythology, and the game's jaw-dropping scope is probably its greatest asset. Just when you think you've seen it all, Ragnarok pops up with something completely new and exciting, time and time again. An immense experience, polished to near perfection. One of PlayStation Studios' best works.
Gran Turismo 7 (PS5)
- Also available on PS4
After Gran Turismo Sport’s esports centric approach, Gran Turismo 7 returns to the revered RPG format of developer Polyphony Digital’s long-running simulation racing series. With a slick driving model and hundreds of cars to collect, it’s the addictive Pokémon-esque GT Café that will keep franchise faithfuls occupied for hours on end. And for competitive players, the online approach innovated by GT Sport remains intact, making for the most complete Gran Turismo in a generation. The cherry on top is that the entire thing is playable in PSVR2, with minimal loss in picture quality; it's incredibly immersive, and among the best games you can play with Sony's headset.
Horizon Call of the Mountain (PS5)
- Only playable with PSVR2
The headline PSVR2 launch title, Horizon Call of the Mountain is a completely new entry in Guerrilla’s imaginative post-apocalyptic universe. While the story can be difficult to follow, the gameplay – which revolves around high-rise platforming – is expertly executed, making you feel like an elite climber in an often hostile world. Beautiful, sprawling vistas and a genuinely jaw-dropping sense of scale combine for an action packed thrill ride that explores the rich potential of Sony’s new headset.
Horizon Forbidden West (PS5)
- Also available on PS4 (excluding Burning Shores expansion)
- Ported to PC on 21st March, 2024
The sequel to Guerrilla Games' breakout hit, Horizon Zero Dawn, is bigger and better than its immediate predecessor in every single way. Horizon Forbidden West may retread familiar territory with its open world RPG adventure, but it improves upon the writing, introducing a worthwhile cast of characters for heroine Aloy to bounce off. New combat and exploration wrinkles, including a grappling hook, intensify the action, while the eponymous Forbidden West is a diverse sandbox, bursting with varied biomes and secrets to discover.
Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered (PS5)
- Also available on PC
- Remaster of Horizon Zero Dawn on PS4
Horizon Zero Dawn is very much one of Sony’s standout projects of the past ten years, and this superb remaster by Nixxes puts it among the best looking games on the PS5. While the side-quests and supporting content don’t quite match up to sequel Forbidden West, the more focused story is arguably better than its successor, and it’s presented almost flawlessly in this remastered format.
Marvel's Spider-Man 2 (PS5)
- Ported to PC on 30th January, 2025
Insomniac Games delivers an ultra-fun sequel in Marvel's Spider-Man 2. Refining pretty much everything that came before while delivering another rollicking superhero story, this is about as solid a follow-up as you could hope for. While it'll be fairly familiar if you've played the other games, new features tip it over the edge. The Web Wings are a huge boon for traversal, combat has been smartly refined, and the side content is more meaningful. It's a real crowd-pleaser, and is another shiny jewel in Sony's PS5 crown.

Like with every new generation, nothing good or interesting so far. Nothing special. Have to wait for next ND project and some of the other 1st parties.
@Grimwood This line-up looks better than the first two PS4 years combined!
Nothing interesting?
I'm really excited for Demon's Souls, Horizon, Ratchet & Clank and Astro Bot, and also will very likely be checking out Sackboy, Spider-Man, GT7.
Personally it's easily the most appealing bunch of games announced pre-console release ever.
@Grimwood say no to drugs ok.what are you talking about.ratchet and clank is amazing.demon souls etc.word up son
Playing through Ratchet & Clank on PS4 right now. It's a simple game but so much fun! Really looking forward to the sequel.
Most exited for Demon's Souls and Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart. I have yet to play Spider-Man and Horizon so I'm probably going to be playing those before I'm getting my hands on the sequels.
This line up is excellent so far!So many games im already excited for.Still, some people are never satisfied.
What I'm eying is ps5 horizon special edition....
Pretty much excited for all of these, Returnal looks the most intriguing but the ones I am most looking forward to are GT7, Spiderman, Astrobot & Horizon so pretty much all of them 🤣
And to think this is only the very beginning for the PS5.
Outside of Demon's Souls I want every one of them!! Too many games not enough time lol!
It's a good start from Sony overall. The key question is how many of these will make it for launch.
That said there are at least 3 titles here I am absolutely looking forward to playing. Good to have a reason to buy a PS5 pretty much right away.
This is a great line up tbh..
Quite a few titles I'm looking forward to
.. Love all of these.. Can you please do a "these are the launch titles" section (maybe including games that will use PS5 at launch via update, etc) it's a shame 99% of these will be 2021+...
Cant wait to see that Horizon sequel to come on P...C like the first game.
@N1ntendodo Going to be quite the wait! 😉
Horizon, Horizon, Horizon.
Oh and the rest aren't too bad either.
😆
A really solid lineup so far! Cannot wait for PS5.
This is such an amazing lineup of games. I’m really excited for Gran Turismo 7, Ratchet and Clank, Horizon Forbidden West, Spider-Man, and even Sackboy!
I never played a Dark Souls game but Demon’s Souls is definitely interesting me as well.
@OneManDroid at this point: launch is only Miles Morales’ Spider Man game. Unless you also want to count the packed in Astro Playground.
I’m still crossing my fingers Ratchet and Clank is 2020, but have a feeling if they thought they could deliver that at launch, we would already know it.
Despite being the only confirmed launch title, we still have to see gameplay for Spider Man.
@Octane yes but with a lot of TBA’s for release dates this could be the first two years of PS5!
@playstation1995 I think it’s you who needs to say no to drugs. He was saying it’s a good lineup not a bad one!
@Dodoo no he wasn't he was hating on the games playa.word up son
I am going to buy........
Demon's Souls, Horizon Forbidden West, Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, Returnal AND Sackboy: A Big Adventure (Only because theres no Knack 3 :-I)
I currently have £709 saved, Possibly £1000 next month?
Ps5 and the Pulse 3D headset....... what ever is left will go on games
@BNAG_Gamer the only game on that list available for purchase at launch is Spider-man, so at least you won't need much for games.
@Dyrual so far, no PS5 version of Yakuza like a dragon has been confirmed. It's supposed to be available for Series X at launch. Maybe it comes to PS5 at a later date
@pip_muzz only spider-man and Astro will be launch titles
Spider man isnt the only game thats available at launch, Yes they wont be first party games BUT I will be buying more than 1 game
Astro Bots is pre installed on the every Ps5, Its basically going to be Sony demo for the Haptic feedback on the Dualsense controller
I want Naughty Dog's game.
I'm going to be broke at launch. Doesn't help that CAD economy sucks so I'll be paying 25% more for console and games 😰
@Grimwood i agree with you. Not much that defines PS5. PS5 is just the same as PS4. No new experiences. Just expansion passes.
Some fantastic games there. R&C and GT7 being my personal stand outs. Will be a drop the mike moment for me if they casually let us know Astro Bot can be played in VR.
That you get every big 3rd party under the sun is also important. That is what PlayStation has always delivered. Port begging is minimal.
SONY's 1st party are just the amazing cherry on top. And I see 5 there.
How many "exclusive" does the Nintendo Switch have?... Yet I use it every 3-4 months because everything else is not available or months late.
Great list. My only concern is Demons Souls. Can i justify paying 70 pounds for something i may not like given the difficulty. I may be waiting for a sale on that one
@playstation1995 I agree he should stop using drugs.
Bunch of games need to be removed from this list lol
@Dyrual buy the xsx and play miles morales on your pro, between this and horizon 2 being ps4 games theres not a lot of reason to go ps5 just yet...
Isn't the new Horizon also coming to ps4?
1. Ratchet & Clank: A Rift Apart
2. Astro Playroom
@menchi In your definition of exclusive maybe
Demon's Souls and Cyberpunk for me until the new year with a sprinkling of Mario 3D All-Stars and the PS4 exclusives I missed like Days Gone and Ratchet and Clank on the ps+ classics thing. Maybe a bit of GTAV too as I haven't played it since the original release on PS3. It's going to be a fun winter gaming-wise which will hopefully help take my mind off our crumbling civilization.
After that I'll have to wait for some deals or price drops as I can't be spending £70 on games no matter how good they are.
This is the first time since I’ve been gaming that I’ve wanted a new console at launch. The lineup is really good this time.
MS’s GamePass is certainly a big draw for Xbox but I can’t help feeling like Sony will dominate again simply because of their excellent exclusives.
If you want the games on Xbox you can play them all on PC. This isn’t true for PS games (in general).
The end of 2021 onwards will be a good time to pick up a PS5. There's life in the PS4 Pro yet, especially with some PS5 games going to be released on it. Most of these games aren't releasing until mid / end of next year, and by then we'll know a lot more about the system.
@Rob_230 if you played any Dark Souls game you should have a good idea about whether it’s for you. And you can test this out cheaply if you haven’t! DS 1,2,3 are very cheap now.
It's better than the PS4 at it's launch with just Knack and Killzone
@Octane "This line-up looks better than the first two PS4 years combined!"
This line-up also looks like the last year of the PS4. 🤣
@AdamNovice You count a game coming to PS4 and PS5 as a PS5 exclusive? You count games coming to PC and PS5 as PS5 exclusive?
@Wavey84
You missed out.
That was the only console generation where I owned all three consoles (PS2, GameCube, and Xbox) and I can tell you that the PS2 was by far the best if we are solely talking about exclusive experiences.
With that said, my two favorite games of that generation were not on PS2. Metroid Prime and Halo 2 were my favorite games of that generation. To this day I don’t think I’ve ever been hyped for a game as much as I was hyped for Halo 2. But metroid prime was my overall favorite.
@Wavey84 I also was onboard with the dreamcast from early on. Great console, wonderful unique games you couldn’t get anywhere else except arcades. Shame about the rampant piracy and poor security. The controller wasn’t the greatest imo.
The PS3 Controller wasn’t Sony’s finest hour but I feel like they took a ‘if it ain’t broke’ approach. The motion controls were abysmal and useless. The PS4 controller is my fav iteration. It’s just so comfortable. But they have one major design flaw. The way the USB cable connects to the controller means I’m constantly breaking the connector if I drop the controller or rage quit and throw it down.
I liked the smaller controllers released for the original Xbox. I found 4 of them at a thrift shop in perfect condition for $10. The original version was clunky as hell and I kind of feel that way about most XBOX controllers.
@TheRedComet yeah the PS2 was unstoppable at that time. I had gamecube and Xbox too but the sheer variety of games and exclusives meant I went back to PS2 again and again.
Not many people I knew owned gamecube. But it was worth it for Twin Snakes and REmake and Mario sunshine. Pretty forgettable controller though 😕
@Wavey84 I never had the pleasure of trying RE4 with Wii motion controls. Everyone tells me it is a great way to control the game but I never had a Wii and never got used to motion controls. I was a bit of a hater because I saw it as a dumb gimmick when I should have been more open minded.
@Wavey84 PS3 was a troublesome child some great first party stuff, many ports or versions which ran like crap because no one knew how to program for the unique architecture. The UI was not good, the controllers were the worst iteration of Sony’s classic design.
@Wavey84 yeah I played through RE5 on both 360 and PS3 and the 360 version looked so much better and ran better. Far less screen tearing and glitches. This is what I get for buying multiple copies of the same game.
@Wavey84 I understand why people dislike 5 but I found it very replayable and fun. Hated 6 though... and Zero was ok but after 2 playthroughs I don’t feel like returning.
RE5’s graphics were so good at the time it still looks better than a lot of PS4 games.
@Agramonte what do you mean with “exclusive” so far Nintendo released for almost every month a Nintendo/Switch exclusive since launch. Yeah some where ports but nonetheless games asked for when look at it sales.
I think that if Nintendo had no so-called “exclusives” that no one would buy their consoles. But I just let Mario and Zelda and Animal Crossing sales speak for themselves.
@Arnna
I agree. I know there is a lot of fuss about gamepass but it's a service not a console. The hype for PS5 is mental.
I havent changed my opinion since the first time I saw the SeX revealed at GA.
This next gen is going to be a blood bath haha.
I may be wrong but I dont really care so theres that 😀
Thanks for the list
@rjejr I don't think anything can top TLOU2 for me personally!
I thought a few of those games are on PS4?
@ViperXT Demon's Souls and Sackboy were both confirmed as launch titles by Sony. It's one heck of a launch with those plus Spidey and Astrobot. Godfall is one, too, but I'm not sold on that one by any means.
@Menchi No I count them as Playstation exclusives
@AdamNovice So not PS5 exclusives. Gotcha. Even though they're on multiple platforms. So why are they on PS5 exclusive lists?
@Octane TLOU2 is, as I just mentioned to my wife the other night as we finally got around to starting The Witcher 3, the game that kind of came and went. She didn't even remember it released already. I honestly don't recall anything about it. I suppose it released while I was busy with the pandemic but it just seemed like it came and went. God of War had literally a patch a day for it's first 10 days, then shortly after had photo mode was added. I can't recall anything about TLOU2 post release. Not even an article about PS5 enhancements. Just poof. OK maybe some review bombing, but not even much of that I don't think.
So, was it really that good? I do think I read it ended, but there could be more, like Horizon ZD?
I think I've been more focused on Ghost of Tsushima. That seems to have a lot more staying power than TLOU2. Certainly a lot more pics in my Twitter feed. I'd probably play Ghost 1st, TLOU2 just seems too depressing. Maybe after the pandemic. TW3 will probably take me thru Christmas.
Question is - is 2020 the PS4s last year, or 2021? 2020 was the obvious choice 2 weeks ago, but with HFW in 2021 next year may still count. 2020 will certainly be viewed as better but 2021 may be it's last year. Has God of War been definitively stated to be PS5 only yet? I still can't believe HFW is coming to PS4, so maybe? Immortals Fenyx Rising looks pretty good too.
I suppose 2020 is PS4s last year for exclusives, but I'll be playing it awhile longer yet.
Only Horizon interests me so far.
MLB The Show 21 and Nioh 1 Complete Edition/Nioh 2 Complete Edition are also on PC and non PS consoles, so are are not exclusive titles. Death Stranding Directors Cut will probs come to PC as well pretty soon (although technically a PS5 exclusive at launch). Cool list though.
A disappointing generation.
Did a big update on this. Ultimately decided we need to reconsider what is a "first-party exclusive" in 2025, and settled upon a few parameters as detailed in the article.
Let me know your thoughts and if anything's missing. (We will reset the comments at some point, though!)
I was pretty confused reading those first comments. 😅
@darylb24 it sure is. Remove any PS4 game, and it leaves only a handful of games in here. Most of them remasters of PS4 games.
Concord is even there on the list as filler material…
Sony really screwed up with their live service gamble and their removal of experimental studios.
You've included Remasters, Remakes and VR, otherwise this would have been a very short list.
Most disappointing PS gen to date...
Damn, most of these don't even reach a 9/10 from the users on the site.
Ah, so this is only the -released- stuff. No Lost Souls Aside, Intergalactic, Saros, Ghost of Yotei, Marvel Tokon, etc quite yet.
I haven't really been picky about the rate of first party exclusives with Sony for ages since they've nearly always been in the perfect position to have so many 3rd party games to fill in any gaps. I'm not exactly sure what changed so much this gen to not have as much of an appreciation for securing 3rd parties, but I've seen what their competition looks like without it before and it can feel like a drought. You don't have to hope for ports nearly as much on this platform.
Huh, I've been constantly told there are zero!
Man, tough Gen. We’ll look back and remember how bad the live service train hurt us
Mmm, sooo...
So that's 7 games only available on the PS5. Two of which require a peripheral that might as well be another console. One of which is an online-focused game that hardly anyone plays. Another of which is a pretty small-scale bundle game (it's fantastic, though, so I'll allow it). And the most recent of which will surely be on PC by the end of next year. We got Yotei coming by the end of the year, so that's 8. Until it inevitably also ends up on PC by the end of next year... So you lose those two, take out Destruction All-Stars (I mean, come on...come on... side eye) and we have Astro Bot, Rift Apart, and two VR games that everyone definitely loves and cares about... Hmm, and people wonder why other people call this console's support disappointing...
You forgot about Climate Station. It's also a game, if you can call it that, from Sony for PS5 and PSVR2.
@Lup
Not EVERY Sony game can be 10/10 for everyone, but if I was to compile my personal top 10 games of the generation, probably only 2 games - Hogwarts Legacy and Lies of P wouldn't be on this list.
You also get the few Xbox/PC fanboys that review bomb Sony exclusives here - pretty sad really.
@RoomWithaMoose I don't get what the fascination is with exclusives. Does a game ONLY being on PS5 alter your enjoyment of it somehow? There are literally thousands of PS5 games to choose from.
Honest question: Do you really have a shortage of things to play?
@Grimwood New? Its almost 5 years matey. That used to be an entire generation. When do you consider a generation is in its swing? 7 years?
Sequels: 9 +1VR (one arguable)
Ports: 3
Remakes / Remasters: 7
Demos: 1
New IP: 6 +1VR + 1DoA
Wow Sony....don't give me too much to play ok?
@themightyant For me I bought a PS5 because I used to love the exclusive games Sony puts out. The third party content is good but I can play that elsewhere, first party is the reason to buy a Playstation over an Xbox or just play on my PC.
I think it's made more frustrating knowing how much they backed GaaS games this gen and how big a flop that's been. And it cost us studios like Pixel Opus and Japan Studio (I know we got Asobi out of the last one but still). Concord infamously cost $400,000,000 only to be gone in a week, goodness knows what the others all cost and how much was wasted overall.
And all that nothingness came at the cost of killing all the smaller, experimental studios that used to fill the gaps between the big cinematic experiences. And I'm expected to be happy with the third party offerings filling the void? I can play half of them for free on my Xbox. Yeah they're good games, but it's not good enough on Sony's part. They've majorly dropped the ball this gen and taken their player-base for granted.
@Ogbert I can understand a bit of that if you are ONLY buying a PS5 for PS5 exclusives, but that is a niche use. However I don't think the rest is all true. E.g.
I see this narrative put about but they still have Team Asobi, Bluepoint, Firesprite, Housemarque, Media Molecule, teamLFG, plus support studios like xDev, Valkyrie, San Matteo, Nixxies, and more... that's hardly killing all the smaller, experimental studios. And they still invest in smaller first/second party games to fill these gaps.
Pixel Opus was closed because their last game, Concrete Genie (which I enjoyed fwiw), didn't sell very well versus 5 years of development costs. The Insomniac leak seemed to confirm that, as it only made just over $2.3 million in total revenue by 2023 before costs... which would have been much higher after 5 years of development. And the rumour was their next game wasn't quite coming together after 4 years of development. Should they keep funding a studio that is losing money for almost a decade? Seems like bad business to me. Though still a shame.
Japan Studio was once great. But i'd take the new Team Asobi over what Japan Studio had become, it had lost it's way, mostly become a support studio, losing many of it's best creatives, better to consolidate talent under Team Asobi and make GOTY games like Astro Bot imo.
I simply don't believe Concord cost $400m. That was one youtuber (Colin Moriarty) that claimed he heard it from one unnamed source. Several journalists refuted that figure: Gamer Radar said $150m, IGN: $200m, other journalists tweeted it wasn't the number they heard / or stated that was not simply true. Regardless the press and commenters ran with it and seem to have made it canon in their heads. Either way, whether $150m - $400m, it was a lot of money, but sometimes games fail, not all can be successes.
Overall I don't think their output is any worse than the first 4 years of PS4 which was also filled with remasters (Last of Us, Uncharted 1-3, God of War 3, Journey, Flower) with the occasional hit (Bloodborne, Uncharted 4) and plenty of above average, but hardly setting the world alight, games like Killzone: Shadow Fall, Infamous: Second Son, Knack, & The Order: 1886.
PS4 first party didn't get really good until the last few years of the generation imo. (GoW, Spider-man, TLOU2, Horizon, GoT, Astro's Rescue Mission etc.) I'd be surprised if PS5 isn't the same, we're basically waiting for many of the same studios to launch their next games.
@lindos this post was resurrected from 5 years ago and that user is banned lol. Goes to show just how little has come down the pipeline this generation
Not. A. Single. New. IP.
How can anyone be happy with that?
@themightyant No, of course not. But it undermines the value of the console the less content is exclusively available on it. It's the same reason people on this site often say there's no reason to own an Xbox anymore; this list makes it pretty clear that one might as well just buy a PC at this point. The ONLY things they would really be missing are Astro and Rift.
Also, while I focused more on pointing out true exclusives, I think the amount of remakes/remasters also hurts. Not so much because I disapprove of their existence, but because when you look at the original content Sony has produced years into this generation — availability on PS4/PC aside — we're still only looking at 17 games. Which, to me at least, really doesn't seem like a lot this far into it. Nevermind how that's including dead/almost dead games, VR titles, and a few games I don't think anyone really cares about...like, at all.
@RoomWithaMoose I can understand that. But was it REALLY any better with PS4? I think people have unrealistic expectations about how many games Sony can put out in 4 years. This list is only the PS5 exclusives* not all their games.
Lucas71 wrote:
Errr... Returnal, Rise of the Ronin, Stellar Blade are all new IP... and while they failed Destruction Allstars and Concord were too. Intergalactic also on it's way.
@themightyant Well therein lies the big picture issue: Sony hasn't been truly great since the PS3. That's generally what gamers like me are constantly trying to say.
But even then, if you were to compare PS4 originals to PS5 originals — on a title-by-title basis — I think there would still be a significant difference of qualitative perception. Most of the PS5's best games are PS4 remakes, after all.
I'm not here saying the PS5 is a bad console. Of course it's not. There are thousands of good games to play on the thing. But I do think it matters that a poultry 5 games aren't available anywhere else (the Switch 2, by comparison, already has half the amount of true exclusives. It's been a month... And I am counting Welcome Tour as .5 a true exclusive).
@RoomWithaMoose Again I can understand that, I just disagree, we all like different things I guess.
Personally I just don't worry myself with what is exclusive or not exclusive as long as I have plenty of games to play... and I do. In fact they could stop making games for a few years and I still wouldn't be through my PS5 backlog.
Too many games, not enough time.
Sony has put a bunch a great games out this gen.
@themightyant TeamLFG is not going to make a small, experimental game, to be fair. They're working on a multiplayer live service game; not the kind of stuff that companies like Japan Studio used to make.
And, yes, Bluepoint was one of those smaller, experimental remake studios, but they have wasted the entirety of this gen (save for the PS5's launch, with Demon's Souls) on a live service multiplayer God of War game. The next Bluepoint game will probably be on the PS6 at launch.
@Questionable_Duck Multiplayer live service games can be smaller and experimental like Fall Guys, Rocket League or Among Us. Perhaps their project is, we don't know for sure, either way it's one studio of a longer list.
As for Bluepoint, of course it is a shame that their previous game failed and never released, but this can happen to the very best. Sony Santa Monica had a game in development for 4ish years before God of War 2018 launched. (Project Darkside). Thankfully they were large enough to also be working on God of War.
Making video games is hard, not every project succeeds or comes to release. Projects are often silently cancelled or rebooted, whether single player or multiplayer. The only reason we even know about this one is because of a leak.
wait... what year is it?
@themightyant My point with the experimental smaller studios is that they're not being allowed to do that anymore. And yeah the PS4 was also not great for it, so the trajectory is a bad one.
Housemarque did get to do Returnal which was experimental and cool...but that was launch and their next game is for 2026.
Firesprite are just doing Horizon and VR stuff.
Bluepoint are doing remasters.
Media Molecule were trying to support Dreams whilst Sony was just leaving it to die and are probably next on the chopping block as they've put out nothing this gen.
Team LFG is too new to judge.
Asobi is the saviour of this gen.
Support studios are doing great support work.
So all those smaller studios you listed have amounted to 2 games and a demo, on opposite ends of the consoles current lifespan. It proves my point.
Don't get me wrong, the new stuff Sony studios are putting out is great (when not a GaaS flop), it's just all too few and far between. These small studios used to fill some of those gaps with smaller exclusive titles. I know it wasn't perfect and a big help was having the home and handheld systems, I could wait for God of War 3 with Patapon, or play Puppeteer between Killzones, WipEout gaps were filled by Tokyo Jungle. Or just brand new IPs like Infamous, LittleBigPlanet, Resistance, Uncharted, Loco Roco etc. And it still had series like Ratchet & Clank going strong and all the third party content.
Now I have a small handful of sequels and originals, another handful of remasters and the rest is all third party or failed GaaS attempts.
Sure Pixel Opus wasn't performing well. But if they could make a game like Concrete Genie whilst not functioning properly, imagine what they could have done if Sony had got in there and helped them straighten their processes and such out? I'm sure it'd be a lot more interesting than Fairgame$.
But hey, if you are happy with the PS5 gen I am actually glad. I wish I could be. I think Playstation, like many things, has shed the veneer of wanting to be creative and interesting and revealed it's ugly corporate core underneath. We always knew it was there, in many ways it has to be, but it was nicer when they at least pretended that money wasn't the sole driving point and that players were as important as shareholders.
@Ogbert I think you are missing one crucial aspect. In the past on PS2, PSP, PS3, PSV, and to a lesser extent PS4, there was a shortage of smaller games like Loco Roco, Puppeteer, etc. so Sony were filling the gaps. On PS5 there just isn't. They may not be from Sony as much but there are literally THOUSANDS of smaller indie / AA games that fit that mould. It's not like there is a shortage of these games anymore.
And it's not like Sony have entirely abandoned them either, Sony still supports some directly with funding / PS+ day 1 deals like Kena, Humanity, Bugsnax, Blue Prince they just aren't made as much by their own studios. As a gamer I don't really care WHERE the games come from, or WHO made them, as long as they are there... and they are in great numbers
As for corporate vs creative i've never seen PlayStation as anything other than a corporate entity, though their studios are VERY creative led. But of course the numbers have to match up, you can't be making a loss, it's a business... and that's no bad thing. Whereas a fully creative led endeavour would be a much smaller thing... more Playdate than PlayStation. Personally I'll take PlayStation.
