Google

The name Google is synonymous with online searches, but over the years the company has grown beyond search and now builds multiple consumer products, including software like Gmail, Chrome, Maps, Android, and hardware like the Pixel smartphones, Google Home, and Chromebooks. Its name can also be found on internet services such as Google Fi, Flights, Checkout, and Google Fiber. Here is all of the latest news about one of the most influential tech companies in the world.

Is ChatGPT just Googling things for you?

As chatbots take a bigger bite out of search and the internet heads toward Google Zero, John Herrman writes, “The era of SEO is over. Say hello to GEO [Generative-engine optimization].”

The experts he spoke to indicated that publishers should focus on quality content to rank highly in AI search, but he also spoke to an ex-Googler who said he’s found evidence that the paid version of ChatGPT is using Google Search -- and he’s not the first one to say that.

Google’s healthcare AI made up a body part — what happens when doctors don’t notice?

Google dubbed an error from its Med-Gemini model a typo. Experts say it demonstrates the risks of AI in medicine.

Google just got a minimum one-week emergency stay before it has to change Android app store policy.

Here’s the entire court filing:

Google LLC (“Google”) has filed an emergency motion for an administrative stay of the district court’s permanent injunction, entered October 7, 2024, pending Google’s forthcoming motion to stay the injunction pending further appellate proceedings. Google’s emergency motion (Dkt. Entry No. 201) is granted. Google should file its motion to stay the injunction pending further appellate proceedings no later than August 8, 2025.

Google previously had two weeks to begin complying. Now it has three weeks, or longer — depends whether these judges think the full Ninth Circuit or Supreme Court will want to weigh in on the permanent injunction against Google.

Google rolls out Deep Think to AI Ultra subscribers.

The advanced problem-solving model, first announced at I/O in May, is now available in the Gemini app for anyone signed up to Google’s $250 per month plan.

The version rolling out is a variant on the model that recently picked up Gold at the International Mathematical Olympiad. While that version took hours to solve complex math problems, the wide release is apparently much faster, but Google estimates it could still get Bronze.

Google’s Pixel Watch 4 might stay the same price, too.

After a leak from Android Headlines showed no major pricing changes for the Pixel 10 lineup, the outlet has shared another rumor that suggests the 41mm Pixel Watch 4 will start at the same $349 price tag for the Wi-Fi version, increasing to $399 for the LTE variant.

Meanwhile, Android Headlines says the larger 45mm Pixel Watch 4 could cost $399 for the Wi-Fi version and $449 with LTE.

A new leak shows off Google’s next budget-friendly Pixel Buds.

Android Headlines published renders of the unannounced Pixel Buds 2A in a light purple color that Google will apparently call “Iris.” I like it. A pair of gray buds showed up in a recent Evan Blass leak, but Android Headlines reports that those are actually a new color for the Pixel Buds Pro 2.

Google is expected to announce a bunch of Pixel hardware at its August 20th event.

Update: Added detail about potential new gray earbuds.

Google calls its new AI model a “virtual satellite.”

Called AlphaEarth Foundations, the model stitches together data from actual satellite images, radar, climate simulations, and more to map Earth’s land and coastal waters.

”The Satellite Embedding dataset is revolutionizing our work by helping countries map uncharted ecosystems - this is crucial for pinpointing where to focus their conservation efforts,” Nick Murray, director of the James Cook University Global Ecology Lab and Global Science Lead of Global Ecosystems Atlas, said in a Google DeepMind blog post.

Google says the UK never ordered encryption access.

Until now it’s stayed quiet on whether it received the same order to open a backdoor to user data as Apple, but a spokesperson confirmed to TechCrunch that it never did. If it had, Google wouldn’t be allowed to say so.

Apple has pulled iCloud encryption from the UK and appealed its order in the courts. Last week it was reported that the UK is ready to give up the fight following US political pressure.

Google falls in line with the EU’s AI plan.

The search giant has followed OpenAI in signing the EU’s voluntary AI code of practice, after Meta snubbed the agreement over “legal uncertainties.” Google also has its complaints despite signing, saying in a statement:

“We remain concerned that the AI Act and Code risk slowing Europe’s development and deployment of AI. In particular, departures from EU copyright law, steps that slow approvals, or requirements that expose trade secrets could chill European model development and deployment.”

Google is rolling out AI Mode for Search in the UK.

You’ll start to see it as a tab in Search or in Google’s iOS and Android apps. Google initially launched the AI-powered search experience in May in the US.

Chrome can now show you reviews of the store you’re browsing.

Click the icon to the left of a URL and you can see a star rating and an AI-generated summary of details about the store.

“The description will cover topics like customer service, product quality, shipping, pricing and returns, helping you understand what to expect from your shopping experience at a glance,” Google says in a blog post.

Google’s Android early warning system severely underestimated Turkey’s lethal earthquakes.

Android Earthquake Alerts uses the network of smartphones to detect tremors, sending alerts to other phones in the affected area. But in a paper published in Science, the company admitted it had found “several limitations” in the algorithm’s performance during two 2023 quakes that killed over 55,000 people.

It underestimated the 7.8 and 7.7 magnitude quakes, and instead of sending 10 million “TakeAction” alerts, which override Do Not Disturb, it sent just 469.

Google’s investing in a CO2 battery.

It’s part of the company’s new push to support the development of technologies that can store renewable energy for longer periods of time than lithium-ion batteries. It’s the kind of thing that might be able to help Google meet growing data center energy demands and maybe even stop its fossil fuel emissions from continuing to rise.

It’s happened again.

Stop me if you’ve heard this one before: Google’s Pixel 10 range has leaked. This time Evan Blass did the honors, sharing images of the 10 Pro and Pro XL, the Watch 4, and our first look at the Buds 2A.

This week we’ve seen repeated leaks of the phone designs, the Watch 4’s new charger, and even an official tease, so there won’t be much left to tell when everything launches on August 20th,

Google’s Pixel Watch 4 should match its new phones.

Yesterday we learned Google’s new smartwatch might charge on its side, and now Android Headlines has shared official renders of it in various colors, matching almost every hue we’ve seen from the Pixel 10 phones: the vibrant “Indigo” and “Limoncello;” the muted “Moonstone” and “Porcelain;” and “Obsidian” black — plus a return for the Pixel 9A’s “Iris” purple.

More colors are expected, while the watch itself will apparently come in black, silver, gold, and “Moonstone.”

<em>As will the equally vibrant “Indigo.”</em>
<em>The “Iris” Active Band is designed to suit the Pixel 9A.</em>
<em>While “Porcelain” can match some 10 Pro models.</em>
<em>“Moonstone” is another Pro color, and gets its own matching watch case too.</em>
<em>And there’s always black if you’re feeling boring.</em>

The AI talent wars are intense! Here’s Windsurf’s second hire describing the way Google came in and reverse acquihired the core AI research team. He didn’t take the deal and is now at another AI coding startup called Cognition, which acquired the rest of Windsurf that Google didn’t want.
