Thursday Morning Update

By Jim Stefkovich, Meteorologist, Alabama Emergency Management Agency

CLANTON – Thursday, 6:30 AM, July 17, 2025

A Heat Advisory is in effect until this evening for portions of western and northern Alabama.  Head Index values will reach as high as 107 today.

At 1 AM, the center of a broad area of low pressure was located south of Mobile and only has a 30% chance of becoming a tropical depression before landfall in Louisiana later today.

Bands of heavy rain will be possible across the state today, especially the southern half through this evening.  Localized flooding may occur.  With that said, many areas will still remain dry, especially across the northern half of Alabama.

After making landfall, the low pressure area will curve northward through the weekend. This will still be close enough to Alabama to produce afternoon and evening scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms statewide from Friday through at least Sunday.

In addition, high temperatures in the middle 90s and high humidity will begin Monday and continuing through next week.  Heat Advisories will likely be issued at some point for portions of the state.
